Are you a Giraffe?
What if someone came up to you and said, “Hey! You’re a giraffe!” I bet you’d look at them strangely or think that you mis-heard them. “Umm, excuse me. Did you just say I was a giraffe?” Why would you be confused by their statement. Well, because you are NOT a giraffe! It is just that simple. Nothing about you can make you a giraffe and I’m sorry but you are not going to change into a giraffe in your lifetime. No, it’s not happening.
There is a point to this. I promise.
Know who you are. Know it before any one ‘tells you’ who you are. Know that you are smart, beautiful, awesome because YOU declared it to yourself. That way when someone says it to you it’s nothing new to you. It’s a recording that had been going on in your head. It’s not personal. It’s not even a compliment. It’s a reality, a fact, a statement of truth. You cannot argue truth. On the flip side, the only reason it hurts when someone says to us, “You’re fat. You’re ugly. You’re not wanted. You’re not good enough” is because that inner dialogue has been going on in our own heads. Their statements only matched what we were hoping no one else was hearing in our own heads.
But is it your truth? Are you really those things? Are you a giraffe? Figure out who you are and declare it! You are whatever you say you are (I’m quoting the great, Eminem, “I am whatever I say I am and if I wasn’t then why would I say I am”…good point, MM, thanks). So when someone declares something that you are not, “Hey, giraffe!” your only reasonable response would be to look at them with disbelief and say, “Excuse me? What did you say?” And it wouldn’t hurt it because you would KNOW that you are NOT a giraffe. You simply were not.
